We kicked off last week with hosting Grade 11/12 students from the Maaqtusiis Secondary Culture Class for one of our autumn workshops, Harvesting the Abundance of Our Bioregion: Forage, Ferment & Folk Herbalism.
Instructor Heather Wolf travelled from Bainbridge Island, Washington to share her passion for herbalism and food preservation with Cedar Coast and Ahousaht Youth. It was a perfect learning experience for all while the NW winds started to bring in the cool autumn air and we we foraged the bountiful evergreen huckleberries.
In only a handful of days, were learned how to prepare Kimchi– a yummy Korean ferment; Beet Kvass– an eastern European vitality tonic; and a Spiced Elderberry Honey Syrup, full of beneficial roots, herbs & spices.
