CCFS Canada Summer Jobs Research Technician
The Cedar Coast Field Station (CCFS) is looking for a summer student with an interest in ecology, conservation, and or fisheries biology to aid us with our juvenile salmon monitoring program. We will be conducting beach seining, purse seining and related monitoring of juvenile salmon on a weekly basis throughout the spring and early summer. The candidate will assist with other in-house monitoring projects and with general station tasks including but not limited to trail maintenance, cooking, cleaning and chopping firewood. The candidate will be provided with accommodations on site at the CCFS in a remote setting on Vargas Island, BC.
The Ideal candidate:
- Physically fit, able to haul a hand deployed beach seine or purse seine net;
- Comfortable working on boats and in intertidal zones, on long days and in inclement weather conditions;
- A background in science, biology preferred, and must have completed some university or college level courses;
- Strong written and oral communication skills;
- Lab and or field work experience;
- First aid training.
Favorable assets:
- Boating experience including SVOP and other marine courses;
- An understanding of salmonid life history and current conservation issues;
- Experience conducting ecological research in an outdoor or lab-based setting;
- Experience beach seining or handling fish;
- Have lived in, or are comfortable living and working in an off-grid setting;
- Self-motivated and able to work effectively independently and as part of a team and;
- Comfortable with data management and analysis, word, excel and google drive software.
As this position is in part funded by Canada Summer Jobs you must:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
Position details:
- Starting April 21st, 2018 (potential to start earlier for the right candidate);
- Minimum 8 weeks at 30hrs/week with potential to extend contract or have increased hours;
- $13.85 / hr;
- Transportation between Tofino and Vargas provided;
- Accommodations and dinners provided while at the station.
