Position: Research Technician
We are looking for a returning student with an interest in ecology, conservation, and biodiversity to assist and implement our in-house monitoring programs. Our programs include terrestrial and marine biodiversity surveys, stream assessments and juvenile salmon monitoring.
Duties may include:
- completing biodiversity and stream assessment surveys.
- assisting in weekly monitoring projects, including beach seining.
- data entry.
- maintaining game cameras and acoustic monitoring devices.
- general station tasks: firewood, brushing, gardening, cooking etc.
Favorable assets:
- boating experience.
- experience conducting ecological research in an outdoor or lab-based setting.
- experience conducting fieldwork.
- have lived in, or are comfortable in an off-grid setting.
- effective communicator.
- self-motivated and able to work effectively independently or as part of a team.
- comfortable living in a communal setting.
Position details:
- starting as early as May 21 2018 (flexible)
- 8 weeks at 30hrs/week
- $12.65/ hr
- transportation from Tofino to Vargas provided
- accomodations and communal dinners included
- access to field station equipment: kayaks, paddleboards etc.
Requirements:
- must be a returning student from a Canadian university
Position: Educational Programs Lead
We are looking for a returning student that has an interest in education, ecology and place-based learning to work alongside our education coordinator to both develop and run programs for visiting and in-house youth summer camps.
Duties may include:
- designing educational programming.
- building or designing education environments such as low ropes courses and/or walking paths with plant ID signs.
- facilitating camps and education groups.
- leading educational programming.
- general station tasks: firewood, brushing, gardening, cooking, etc.
Favorable assets:
- boating experience
- a proven interest in ecology and sciences
- completion of some undergraduate science courses
- camp-counseling or education experience with youth
- experience and ability to live in an “off-grid” environment with limited facilities
- proven communication or facilitation experience (e.g. public speaking, performing arts)
- comfortable living in a communal and mixed-gender setting
Position details:
- Preferable start date mid June
- 8 weeks at 30hrs/week
- $12.65/ hr
